React Pagination: Here’s How to Use It

    What is React Pagination?

    There is a notion of react pagination in the modern world. In this world, we split a document into electronic pages/discrete pages. Now, these pages rendered on a web browser are known as web pages. Also, the content and these pages in these pages which are supposed to be rendered are associated with each other. So they use reactjs pagination. Reactjs pagination library can be utilized directly for paging functions for any listing of items. The necessary props here are a range of items of the list to be rendered. It also has a callback function onChange which informs the main component about the page change. The default value for the current page is 1, the page range to be displayed is 5and items per page are 10.

    What does React Pagination tell us?

    Pagination has its own significance in terms of filtering and screening only relevant data. The Google search engine can be an example. So reactjs pagination becomes critical when a user is looking for specific information and not absorbing any random information. There are a massive number of integral libraries that are accessible to managing pagination. In web development, especially in the matter of React also there are a vast number of resources accessible. So that you can use straight to hold pagination for the application.

    Where can we use React Pagination?

    It is very easy to use. Just offer props with the total quantity of things that you want to present on the page.

    import React, { Component } from “react”;

    import ReactDOM from “react-dom”;

    import Pagination from “react-js-pagination”;

    Require (“bootstrap/less/bootstrap. Less”);

    class App extends Component {

    constructor(props) {

    this.state = {

    activePage: 15

    handlePageChange(pageNumber) {

    console.log(`active page is ${pageNumber}`);

    this.setState({activePage: pageNumber});

    render() {

    return (

    }                                                            (

    Pagination – A easy way

    There are a lot of resourceful materials online that deliver decent insights into pagination in ReactJs. Also the NPM packages you can use easily. Now we very much appreciate the materials and love to utilize those packages. Although they are mainly casual with loading the whole dataset on the page first. After then you can completely manage the pagination for the frontend. We would be approaching this article with the conception of loading the exact data desirable on the page. After then manually downloading the dataset based on the request when the user would click the pagination number display.

    Pagination Data Format

    In many cases, when you are creating API calls to any endpoint that returns paginated data, you need to exceed at least the page number with the URL; therefore a sample URL will be like below:

    The most significant thing to take note of in the URL above is the “page=2where 2”. It is the page number dataset we want to get. It could be 3,4 or any number as much as the dataset we would have in the backend.

    The response will constantly contain three vital data which are per_page, actual data and the total we want to circle through.

    React Pagination using Material-UI

    Material-UI delivers a Pagination component that allows the user to choose an exact page from a variety of pages.

    For example, with Pagination components below:

    <Pagination count={10} />

    <Pagination count={10} color=”primary” />

    <Pagination count={10} variant=”outlined” />

    <Pagination count={10} variant=”outlined” color=”primary” />

    <Pagination count={10} shape=”rounded” />

    <Pagination count={10} variant=”outlined” shape=”rounded” />   (courtesy-

    Now look at the example which will be telling about react-pagination with the aid of code and some computation.

    getPager(totalItems, currentPage, pageSize) {

    // default to first page

    currentPage = currentPage || 1;

    // default page size is 10

    pageSize = pageSize || 10;

    // calculate total pages

    var totalPages = Math.ceil(totalItems / pageSize);

    var startPage, endPage;

    if (totalPages <= 10) {

    // less than 10 total pages so show all

    startPage = 1;

    endPage = totalPages;

    } else {

    // more than 10 total pages so calculate start and end pages

    if (currentPage <= 6) {

    startPage = 1;

    endPage = 10;

    } else if (currentPage + 4 >= totalPages) {

    startPage = totalPages – 9;

    endPage = totalPages;

    } else {

    startPage = currentPage – 5;

    endPage = currentPage + 4;

    // calculate start and end item indexes

    var startIndex = (currentPage – 1) * pageSize;

    var endIndex = Math.min(startIndex + pageSize – 1, totalItems – 1);

    // create an array of pages to ng-repeat in the pager control

    var pages = […Array((endPage + 1) – startPage).keys()].map(i => startPage + i);

    // return an object with all pager properties required by the view

    return {

    totalItems: totalItems,

    currentPage: currentPage,

    pageSize: pageSize,

    totalPages: totalPages,

    startPage: startPage,

    endPage: endPage,

    startIndex: startIndex,

    endIndex: endIndex,

    pages: pages

    Table pagination

    The Pagination component was intended to paginate a list of arbitrary items when infinite loading isn’t utilized. It’s ideal in contexts where SEO is essential, for example a blog.

    For any pagination of a large set regarding tabular data, you should apply the Table Pagination component.

    Server-side pagination

    Now the pagination functions on the client-side. To change it to server-side, put paginationMode=”server”. You are also required to set the recount prop. SO that the grid knows the total amount of pages. Finally, you need to manage the onPage Change to download the rows for the consequent page.

    Controlled pagination

    While the earlier demos explain how the pagination can be unrestrained, the active page could be controlled with the on page/PageChange props.

    Custom pagination component

    Follow the rendering division of the documentation for designing the pagination component.

    Create React Pagination Component with Hooks

    The component has:

    • a search bar for searching Tutorials by their title
    • a select element for amount of items per page
    • a Material-UI Pagination module
    • a tutorials collection displayed as a catalog on the left
    • a selected Tutorial which is presented on the right

    Today we’ve built a React Pagination example that consumes API successfully with Material UI. we hope you apply it in your project at ease. Give it a little time, pay attention to codes and instructions. It is a great platform to explore and invent. Use it wisely/ Happy learning, see you soon.
